One standard, two lines.

Why a company that writes software also cuts cloth — and why that is less strange than it sounds.

People assume the two halves of this company are a hedge — software to pay the bills, clothing for love. They are not. They are the same business done twice, in two materials. We build software and we build garments because we believe the discipline that makes either one good is identical, and rare, and worth organizing a company around.

That discipline has a name we have borrowed from manufacturing: building to tolerance. A tolerance is the margin a part is allowed to deviate from its specification before it is wrong. Engineers live by them. So do patternmakers, though they rarely use the word. A seam allowance is a tolerance. A latency budget is a tolerance. In both trades, the difference between a thing that feels considered and a thing that feels cheap is whether someone decided, in advance and in writing, how close to right it had to be.

Anything worth making is worth specifying first.

The specification is the common object

A software system and a sweatshirt do not look alike, but they begin as the same kind of artifact: a written description of a thing that does not exist yet. What it must do. What it is made of. How you will know it is right. We call that document a specification, and we refuse to start without one — not because process is virtuous, but because the spec is where all the expensive decisions are cheap to change.

Skip it and you pay later, in both trades. Software without a spec becomes a pile of decisions no one remembers making. A garment without one becomes a sample that fits the sample and nothing else. The spec is the moment the work is still arguable, still on paper, still costing nothing to fix. Everything after it is just fabrication.

Why keep them under one roof

Because the two lines keep each other honest. The software side teaches the apparel side to write its tolerances down and test against them. The apparel side reminds the software side that an object you can hold has no console to hide its defects in — a dropped stitch is a dropped stitch. Each is a control group for the other's standards.

We are not the first to make both software and goods, and we will not be the last. But we are deliberate about the claim underneath it: that craft is not the material, it is the method. Get the method right and you can point it at almost anything. We have chosen to point it at two.
